WoW Forever · Shield tanking (Rage)
Protection Warrior
Protection makes the shield and Defensive Stance part of the tanking job. Pull deliberately, position the enemies and identify who needs an immediate control or threat action. Damage is useful, but an impressive attack does not compensate for a missed interrupt, unsafe position or unavailable defense.
Current beta play is capped at level 30. Level 60 reference models and deeper talents are identified as later planning. Client descriptions and server updates can differ.
In this guide
What this build asks you to do
Revenge becomes available after a block, dodge or parry and requires Defensive Stance in the published spell description. That makes a defensive event create an offensive decision. Vanguard can make Charge usable in Defensive Stance when learned; it is not baseline permission to ignore stance requirements. Deeper Shield Slam uses shield-related inputs rather than behaving like an ordinary two-handed weapon strike.
- Defensive events can create useful reactive attacks.
- Shield, stance and Rage requirements constrain the sequence; tank damage alone does not establish safety.

Choose the next action
- Begin with the shield and appropriate stance, then pull into a position where you can identify enemies threatening the party. A damage score is not proof that each enemy is controlled.
- After a block, dodge or parry, inspect Revenge’s availability and use it when useful in Defensive Stance. The defensive event creates the opportunity; it is not granted by every incoming attack.
- Spend Rage on the control and threat action the group needs next. Keeping enough for an interrupt or defensive response can matter more than another optional damage spend.
- With Vanguard learned, Charge can be used under its altered stance rule. Without that talent, the reference does not grant baseline permission to ignore stance requirements.
- Use deep Shield Slam only when actually learned and equipped for its shield-related inputs. A tank model’s future damage priority does not rank surviving the next pull.

A defensive event enables a Revenge choice
Click through an illustrative sequence. Conditional effects require the named spells and talents; this is not a damage, resource, threat or timing simulation.
- Use the defensive setup: Begin with the shield and required Defensive Stance for the illustrated response.
- A defensive event occurs: In this example a block, dodge or parry creates Revenge availability; it is not guaranteed on every incoming hit.
- Choose Revenge: Use the learned attack with the required stance and usable Rage.
- Return to control: A needed interrupt or defense can take priority over another damage spend.

Build the toolkit
Complete the Defensive Stance introduction and learn Revenge before depending on the cycle. Vanguard is a point choice at 25, while Shield Slam is deeper level 40 planning. A finished level 60 tank preset is not your early trainer stock.

Understand the upgrade
Evaluate the actual shield, health and defensive outcomes rather than importing a DPS-only gear score.
A reactive event enables a choice, but it does not guarantee enough Rage or remove stance requirements.
These examples isolate attribute relationships. They are not a prediction of full ability DPS, threat, pet damage or survivability.
| Comparison | Meaning |
|---|---|
| +7 Strength | +14 baseline melee AP before modifiers. Using the declared ordinary weapon-tooltip model, that is +1 nominal weapon DPS. |
| A 3.5-second ordinary swing | That AP contribution adds +3.5 nominal damage per swing before hit outcomes, mitigation and other effects. |
| +10 Agility | About +0.962 percentage points of weapon crit at level 30; it is not a fixed conversion at every level. |

Questing and group play
Practice small controlled pulls before tanking several enemies at once. In groups, follow the loose target, healer position and dangerous casts as well as your current enemy. Communicate when Rage or health makes the next pull unsafe. For solo quests, a damage-oriented alternative can improve pace, but it is a different role comparison.

Choose useful equipment
Compare the shield and useful defense with health, weapon contribution and control needs. An apparent weapon-DPS gain can be a poor exchange if it removes the equipment required by your defensive interaction. The saved Protection reference is damage-only, not a survival or threat gear list.
