WoW Forever

Hunter guide

Fight at range with a bow or gun and a beast companion. Good Hunter play combines damage, positioning and deliberate pet commands.

WoW Forever beta · Updated 3 October 2026

QUICK START

Reach your first pet quest, bind both attack and recall, and keep your ranged weapon up to date. Beast Mastery is a straightforward starting route for solo quests.

ROLE

Ranged damage · Pet control

RESOURCE

Mana

01

Distance and a companion

A pet gives you time to attack from range. Watch which enemy it is fighting, how much health it has, and whether a second enemy is approaching you. Those three checks matter more than pressing every shot as soon as it lights up.

Forever gives pet families distinct abilities and pets scale with Hunter gear. Choose a companion whose tools fit the fights you enjoy, then learn those tools.

02

Three talent paths

You create a Hunter first, then develop a talent path as you level. Read the choices below as playstyles: early points and a fully developed build are different stages of the same character.

Beast Mastery

Build around your companion. Talents strengthen you and your pet, while Summon Hawk adds a temporary attacker. Keep the main pet alive and in position before adding more damage.

Marksmanship

Emphasise ranged attacks, critical strikes and precision. Lone Wolf offers a pet-free option once you can reach it; it is a choice within the tree, rather than a rule for every Hunter.

Survival

Use traps and melee tools alongside your ranged attacks. Learn to move between ranges deliberately; choosing Survival does not mean removing your shots from the action bar.

Use the planner to read the current talents and check row requirements. Legacy’s Talented bonus adds points separately; leave its rank at zero unless your character has earned the bonus.

A controlled pull

See a controlled pet pull

After taming your pet
Ready to try

Begin with your pet beside you. Choose a step or play the sequence to see how the pull develops.

Hogger is an illustrative opponent. Distance, damage and spell timing are not simulated. Blizzard’s class overview · Reviewed 4 October 2026.

Read all four steps
  1. Send your pet. Pick one enemy and send your pet. Let it engage before you begin shooting.
  2. Shoot from range. Attack from range while your pet fights. Watch both your target and the space around you.
  3. Create space. If an enemy reaches you, use your available control and move away. Check your retreat path before moving.
  4. Recall your pet. Bring your pet back when the pull ends or becomes unsafe. Avoid sending it into the next pack.

Aimed Shot is baseline in Forever at level 20. Traps can be used during combat, so they are a practical response to trouble rather than something you must always place before a pull.

Read more: Aimed Shot and trap updates.

Auto Shot no longer has the old cast time in Forever. Move to maintain safe range; save deliberate stationary casting for Aimed Shot. Advice that makes every Auto Shot depend on stopping comes from a different version of the game.

Let the pet engage before spending your largest shot, and recall it through ground you have already cleared. A Passive/Follow key is more dependable than repeatedly clicking the pet bar during an accidental pull.

Check pet ability ranks as well as the pet’s level. An unfamiliar pet family may add a useful special ability, but a new family is not automatically a damage upgrade. Keep a basic attack available and watch its Focus use.

For a short single-target kill, compare Aimed Shot with the mana and cast time it takes. For several controlled enemies, Multi-Shot may be useful instead. Neither justifies breaking another player’s Polymorph or Sap.

Forever beta · Client data

Strength affects baseline melee Attack Power. Ranged Attack Power comes from Agility here; these examples do not calculate pet damage.

Level 30: class baseline, before buffs and talents.

Strength+7Attribute increase
Melee Attack Power+71 AP per Strength
AP contribution+0.5Nominal weapon DPS · AP ÷ 14
Per ordinary swing+1.75At 3.5 seconds, before mitigation

The AP contribution is added to the weapon's base DPS. It is not total combat DPS. Listed weapon speed is used; haste, misses, crits, armor, procs and special attacks are excluded.

Intellect

Mana gained
+150

Uses existing plus added effective Intellect: the first 20 contribute 1 mana per point; above 20, 15 per point. This is neither Spell Power nor mana regeneration.

“pp” means percentage points: +1 pp takes 5% to 6%, before other modifiers. Crit contributions are not total crit chances.

Stamina
The first 20 effective points add 1 health each. Above 20, the client uses your character’s current health-per-point rate; health buffs and talents can change the gain.
Mana per 5 seconds
+5 MP5 gives 60 mana over one minute, assuming a constant effective rate and enough missing mana to receive it.
Spirit
Mana recovery depends on class rules, talents and when you spend mana. See the regeneration mechanics.
Spell Power
Applied by each spell and rank's coefficient. It has no universal damage or healing conversion. Inspect the spell-rank data.

Interactive figures use class baseline: race, buffs, talents, form overrides and server-side changes are not applied. The client data describes configured conversions; it is not a combat-log measurement or a gear ranking.

  • Attack Power: added Strength × the class's AP-per-Strength field. Agility's melee and ranged AP fields are kept separate.
  • Crit: added attribute × its exact class-and-level coefficient × 100. No interpolation or Classic fallback is used.
  • Ordinary swing contribution: added AP ÷ 14 × listed weapon speed. The divisor and +2 armor per Agility come from the matching client tooltip code.
  • Configured mana contribution at effective Intellect I: min(I, 20) + 15 × max(I − 20, 0). An increase across the breakpoint is the difference between the old and new totals.
  • Stamina's first-20 breakpoint is present in the matching constants file. The exact above-20 Forever rate has not been verified; the UI obtains it from the game's runtime API.

Compare ranged weapons first when most of your damage comes from shooting. Agility and other useful attack stats matter, but do not overlook the weapon itself. Intellect supports your mana budget.

Check ammunition before a long quest loop or dungeon. Keep pet food and bag space available; a companion that needs attention is easier to manage at a safe stop than during a pull.

RFC · Oggleflint

Barbaric Crossbow: requires level 13, 9.50 weapon DPS, plus its damage proc. Compare it with your current ranged weapon; this is a named early target, not a guaranteed drop.

Hall of Thanes · quest

Calibrated Blunderbuss from Old Ironforge Incursion: 9.57 weapon DPS. A quest reward offers a reliable alternative to waiting for a boss weapon.

Hall of Thanes · armour

Spiritwraith Drape from Faldrim and Direhammer Leggings from Durgen are Agility-oriented comparisons. Choose by the stats you use rather than taking every leather drop.

05

Make the pet part of the plan

Wait for the tank’s pull, attack the marked target, and keep your pet away from controlled enemies. Ask before using a trap on a target the group intends to kill immediately.

Recall or dismiss your companion before a risky shortcut, then summon it again safely. Watch its route as well as your own. Multi-target attacks need the same care: nearby enemies may not all belong to the current pull.

06

Ability and build milestones

Level 10

Tame Beast. Your first companion changes how you pull. Finish the class quest, feed the pet and bind attack plus Passive/Follow recall.

Level 18

Multi-Shot. An additional multi-target option. At 20 it shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot; choose one for the pull rather than trying to use both together.

Level 20

Aimed Shot. Baseline training, not a Marksmanship talent. Its two-second cast is a deliberate opening or follow-up; do not mistake the cast for Auto Shot.

Level 20

Aspect of the Cheetah. Less time travelling between objectives. Switch out before taking damage so the daze does not turn a retreat into a death.

Level 25

Summon Hawk. A Beast Mastery talent at its earliest normal unlock. It adds a temporary attacker and shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot.

Level 30

Feign Death. An escape and threat tool. Recalling the pet remains a separate action; do not assume Feign Death cancels the pet’s pull.

These are toolkit changes, not measured percentage-DPS claims. Talent unlocks assume enough points in the required tree; Legacy bonuses and off-tree points can change when a build reaches them.
