WoW Forever · Melee and ranged damage

Survival Hunter

Survival explores what happens when a Hunter actively manages melee contact rather than only avoiding it. Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite belong to a different weapon context from ranged shots. Wing Clip and the tree’s movement tools can create a choice between continuing melee pressure and reopening distance.

Current beta play is capped at level 30. Level 60 reference models and deeper talents are identified as later planning. Client descriptions and server updates can differ.

What this build asks you to do

Counterattack has a parry condition; seeing its name in the tree does not mean it is always available. Strider Kick adds a melee attack and movement benefit. Later Lacerating Strikes attaches a bleed to Mongoose Bite. These are distinct triggers, so a survival experiment should track which event enabled an attack instead of comparing only the bow’s tooltip.

  • Melee options and movement tools make repositioning more active.
  • Being close changes risk and weapon inputs; a ranged-only gear score misses the experiment.

Choose the next action

  • Decide whether this enemy should be fought in melee or at range before spending the next attack. Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite use a melee context that your bow tooltip does not describe.
  • Use Wing Clip to create a movement decision. Strider Kick can support the next reposition, but the useful result depends on where you choose to move.
  • Watch Counterattack’s parry condition. Its availability is an event to notice, not a repeatable button that every melee contact grants.
  • When distance opens, switch to the learned ranged attacks that fit it. Avoid committing a melee attack while planning to kite the same enemy away.
  • Later Lacerating Strikes adds a Mongoose Bite bleed. The saved Survival reference is a custom Lone Wolf model with a documented beta-gear exception, not a proven all-purpose pet rotation.

A melee interaction can create a ranged choice

Click through an illustrative sequence. Conditional effects require the named spells and talents; this is not a damage, resource, threat or timing simulation.

  • Slow with Wing Clip: Apply the learned slow to a susceptible enemy while in the correct range.
  • Use Strider Kick: When learned, the melee attack grants its temporary movement benefit.
  • Choose your distance: Use that movement to create distance or stay in a useful melee position.
  • Change the attack context: Resume a ranged shot only from a valid firing position; the melee weapon and bow are separate inputs.

Retain the pet-introduction and baseline shot learning from the class journey even when planning Survival. Strider Kick and Counterattack are learned point choices; the full Lacerating Strikes package is deeper than ordinary level 30 access.

    Understand the upgrade

Compare the melee weapon for melee abilities and the ranged weapon for shots; neither replaces the other.

Agility supports ranged AP and Armor, but a dodge or parry outcome is not guaranteed by that attribute total.

These examples isolate attribute relationships. They are not a prediction of full ability DPS, threat, pet damage or survivability.

    Understand the upgrade
    Comparison Meaning
+10 Agility +10 baseline melee AP and +20 ranged AP; about +0.417 percentage points of weapon crit at level 30, before talents.
Weapon context A bow/gun upgrade and a melee-weapon upgrade affect different attacks.
Survival or reserve A damage stat does not replace the health and resource reserve needed to finish the pull.

    Questing and group play

For solo play, test small pulls before committing to a melee experiment; your pet and escape choices may still be useful outside the cited Lone Wolf preset. In a party, let the tank control the pack and keep your own movement predictable. A movement talent is not permission to drag enemies through nearby groups.

    Choose useful equipment

Compare the melee weapon, ranged weapon and attack mix independently. A large bow upgrade does little for a melee attack that does not use it; a melee weapon can change the experimental package while weakening a ranged option. Keep health and usable defensive or escape tools in the comparison.
