Protection Paladin
Keep control of the pull, make Seal of Fury work with your shield, and balance threat tools against survival and mana.
The current beta cap is level 30, announced 1 October 2026. Current-play advice and later level 60 planning are separated. Client tooltips and native data can lag server changes.
Protection Paladin tanking starts with control: the right targets attacking you, a shield equipped for the mechanics that need it, and enough mana to respond when the pull changes. Damage is useful when it helps hold enemies, but a damage-only item comparison does not tell you whether the healer can sustain the pull. The practical sequence here is for the current level 1–30 beta; deeper talents are listed separately.
Prepare before you spend mana
Check the shield, weapon, active seal and threat buff before the pull. Seal of Fury’s first Forever rank is listed at level 10, and its absorb effect requires a shield. Righteous Fury is listed at level 16 and increases threat from Holy attacks; it is a later addition to the early tanking setup. Check that you have learned the required spells before planning the pull around them.
Inspect the enemies before deciding how many to take. Pick the first kill target and agree who handles casts or crowd control. Paladin’s toolkit still has gaps, so coordinate another player’s interrupt rather than pretending that damage and a taunt solve every dangerous cast. Begin with mana for control and recovery, not just enough to cast your opener.

A controlled pull
Use a suitable available pull tool or a careful approach, then bring enemies into a position the group can work with. Keep the pack together without dragging it into the next group. Start attacking the priority target and make your Holy attacks contribute to control.
With Seal of Fury active, Judgement supplies the seal’s taunt. Judgement does not consume the active seal in Forever. Reapplying Fury after every Judgement is unnecessary; instead watch the seal’s remaining duration and whether a different seal has replaced it. Once Consecration is learned, place it where the enemies will remain rather than where they happened to stand before the pull settled.
- Set the pull: check safe space, healer position, mana and the first target.
- Establish control: attack and use your learned Holy threat tools on targets the group will damage.
- Hold the position: let enemies remain inside your ground effect when safe, and avoid unnecessary movement through nearby packs.
- Reassess: target loose enemies deliberately; do not spend the entire mana bar on damage while recovery tools are needed.

Recover a loose target deliberately
When an enemy leaves you, identify which enemy moved and who it is attacking. Check Fury is active before using Judgement as the taunt; the same button under another seal has a different job. A taunt is a response to the loose target, not evidence that every enemy in the pack is now secure.
If talented, Swift Judgement resets Judgement’s remaining cooldown and removes the next Judgement’s mana cost. Save that option for a useful recovery rather than automatically spending it in every opener. Ask the group to bring a loose melee enemy back into the controlled area when safe, and use available control while the taunt response is unavailable. Avoid chasing through another pack.

Mana returns have conditions
Improved Seal of Fury is tied to its absorb shield being fully consumed. Shield Specialization links blocks to a mana-return effect. Those are different triggers. Neither guarantees unlimited mana against every target, and neither means that pulling more enemies is always safer.
Against melee packs, your shield-related effects can be relevant repeatedly. Against casters, check what is actually being blocked or absorbed rather than expecting the same returns. Budget Consecration and other offensive casts around the pull’s duration and the mana you need if control fails. Before the next pull, give both yourself and the healer time to recover; faster individual kills are not useful if the group must stop after every pack.

Compare a complete tanking setup
For baseline Paladin weapon accounting, +7 effective Strength gives +14 melee AP. On the client’s 14-AP tooltip basis, that is +1 nominal weapon DPS, before misses, critical strikes, armor and ability rules. This explains one offensive gain; it does not calculate threat, survivability or the best tanking item.
Strength’s configured block-value contribution increases by one for every complete 20 points of total Strength. An upgrade from 33 to 40 Strength adds one block value, while 40 to 47 adds none. Block value is not block chance. Check the actual before-and-after totals and whether blocking is available with the loadout.
A shield contributes more than its damage-block number: it is also a prerequisite for Fury’s absorb effect. Compare armor, Stamina, mana-related stats and useful threat stats across the whole setup. +10 Agility adds 20 configured armor, but an exact Agility-to-dodge coefficient is not verified here. Do not turn these individual conversions into one unsupported tanking score.

Training priorities through the beta
Build the early toolkit around the spells you have learned. Seal of Fury’s new first rank is level 10 in the native data; Righteous Fury is 16, and baseline Consecration is 20. Later ranks and utility should be checked against the current trainer or acquisition route rather than inferred from an old Classic shopping list.
Prioritize the tanking spells and recovery tools needed for your next dungeon. Add damage ranks that improve the route you actually play. Keep a healing or solo set if you regularly fill those roles, but do not spend a fresh character’s entire budget trying to maintain every possible build at once.

Separate current choices from later tank tools
Holy Shield is listed at level 40, beyond the beta’s level 30 cap. Blizzard’s 1 October notes changed its listed block bonus to 30% and Redoubt’s rank bonuses to 4/8/12/16/20%. Those published changes do not make Holy Shield available to a level 30 character.
Templar’s Bulwark is a different choice: it is listed at level 30, but still needs the relevant talent investment. Check its absorb and Forbearance restrictions before using it as a recovery button. Iron Creed’s Holy Strike interaction belongs to deeper-build planning. Use the tools your current build actually has rather than adding every endgame talent to a low-level survivability estimate.

A profession should solve a real gap
Engineering goggles can fill a weak low-level head slot if you meet the personal skill requirement, while devices or explosives may add useful options once their current use and acquisition gates are known. A purchased item does not bypass its owner’s Engineering requirement.
Judge the choice by your targets and route: which slot improves, which materials or gold it costs, and whether the profession remains useful after that upgrade. Keep faction-only quests, binding and experience earned on the route separate from the item’s equip level when planning a tank twink.

The AP contribution is added to the weapon's base DPS. It is not total combat DPS. Listed weapon speed is used; haste, misses, crits, armor, procs and special attacks are excluded.
Uses existing plus added effective Intellect: the first 20 contribute 1 mana per point; above 20, 15 per point. This is neither Spell Power nor mana regeneration.
“pp” means percentage points: +1 pp takes 5% to 6%, before other modifiers. Crit contributions are not total crit chances.
- Stamina
- The first 20 effective points add 1 health each. Above 20, the client uses your character’s current health-per-point rate; health buffs and talents can change the gain.
- Mana per 5 seconds
- +5 MP5 gives 60 mana over one minute, assuming a constant effective rate and enough missing mana to receive it.
- Spirit
- Mana recovery depends on class rules, talents and when you spend mana. See the regeneration mechanics.
- Spell Power
- Applied by each spell and rank's coefficient. It has no universal damage or healing conversion. Inspect the spell-rank data.

Interactive figures use class baseline: race, buffs, talents, form overrides and server-side changes are not applied. The client data describes configured conversions; it is not a combat-log measurement or a gear ranking.
- Attack Power: added Strength × the class's AP-per-Strength field. Agility's melee and ranged AP fields are kept separate.
- Crit: added attribute × its exact class-and-level coefficient × 100. No interpolation or Classic fallback is used.
- Ordinary swing contribution: added AP ÷ 14 × listed weapon speed. The divisor and +2 armor per Agility come from the matching client tooltip code.
- Configured mana contribution at effective Intellect I: min(I, 20) + 15 × max(I − 20, 0). An increase across the breakpoint is the difference between the old and new totals.
- Stamina's first-20 breakpoint is present in the matching constants file. The exact above-20 Forever rate has not been verified; the UI obtains it from the game's runtime API.

Sources & scope
Use your learned spell ranks and current talent points; reaching a level does not automatically unlock every ability.
Beta tooltips can lag server changes. The current beta cap is level 30; later-build advice is identified separately.
Seal of Fury’s absorb effect requires a shield. Judgement’s effect depends on the seal you currently have active.
Holy Shield starts beyond the current beta cap; Templar’s Bulwark is a separate level 30 talent choice that still requires a qualifying build.
Individual stat conversions do not predict final threat, damage or survivability. Shield-related mana returns have their own trigger conditions.
