Mana regeneration by class and talent
Compare mana-retention talents, temporary effects and casting patterns across all seven mana-using classes.
Checked 4 October 2026 · Forever client build 1.60.1.70205. This comparison covers all seven mana-using classes, including Hunter. Talent values come from matching client trait curves and current Forever database entries. They describe the client data; stacking, scripted effects and server hotfixes still need separate live checks.
There are three different numbers to keep apart: your ordinary regeneration rate, the percentage a talent allows to continue during suppression, and the mana gained from a temporary effect. They cannot be added together as if they were the same stat.
Start with your character's two rates
For Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Shaman and Warlock, exact server-effective Spirit conversions by class and level remain unverified. Class-specific suppressed baselines without talents or buffs also remain unverified. “Unknown” does not mean zero.
The pinned Forever character-sheet implementation converts both regeneration rates to mana per five seconds for display. Its Spirit tooltip asks the game for Spirit-derived regeneration. Neither script supplies the underlying class and level formula.
Compare your actual full and suppressed rates with your current equipment, race, talents, Legacy bonuses and buffs. Do not substitute a level-60 Classic formula for an unverified Forever level-20 rate.
Persistent retention talents
These percentages are the client's talent rank values for regeneration retention. They are not extra MP5, percentages of maximum mana, or complete class regeneration formulas.
| Class | Talent | Rank 1 | Rank 2 | Rank 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paladin | Reverence | 10% | 20% | 30% |
| Priest | Meditation | 17% | 33% | 50% |
| Mage | Arcane Meditation | 17% | 33% | 50% |
| Druid | Reflection | 17% | 33% | 50% |
| Shaman | Mindfulness | 17% | 33% | 50% |
| Hunter | Bestial Discipline | 25% | 50% | — |
| Warlock | No persistent retention entry established in this comparison | Unverified | Unverified | Unverified |
Build evidence: the associated trait definitions, effect-point references and curve points reproduce these rank values. The TalentsForever export from build 1.60.1.70170 provides older corroboration, not a substitute for the matching build. No unselected talent is included in a character's baseline.
Bestial Discipline has separate effects for pet Focus and player mana retention. Its retention curve is 25/50. The pet branch has raw effect-modifier coordinates of 10/20; those are not established percentages of actual pet Focus regeneration. Applying the wrong effect would produce the wrong mana comparison. Mindfulness likewise has a base spell value of 5 but a rank curve of 17/33/50. A spell's default value is not necessarily its selected talent rank.
Warlock's Soul Harvest belongs in the conditional table below. These tables cover selected effects, rather than every possible source of mana recovery.
Temporary effects and additional modifiers
| Class or race | Effect | Current client values | When it matters | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Priest | Spirit Tap | Activation chance 20/40/60/80/100% by rank; buff +100% Spirit and 50% retention for 15 seconds | A qualifying kill, including the tooltip's Vampiric Embrace target condition | Effective uptime and stacking with Meditation |
| Warlock | Soul Harvest | Trait values 50/100 for regeneration increase and retention; 10-second effect | Killing a non-trivial target affected by Drain Soul | How the talent's scripted values reach the triggered buff, especially rank 1; stacking |
| Hunter | Rapid Recuperation | Serpent Sting branch 25/50% retention; Rapid Killing branch 50/100%; 15 seconds | The two specified actions, not an assumed permanent buff | Scripted buff application, refresh behavior and stacking |
| Hunter | Resourcefulness | The current tooltip describes a critical-strike proc with 50% retention for 30 seconds | A qualifying proc | Rank-specific proc probability and runtime mapping; signed curve values must not be read as probabilities |
| Mage | Mage Armor | 50% retention; native first-rank SpellLevel 34 | With Mage Armor active at an eligible level | Trainer access and stacking with Arcane Meditation; native SpellLevel 34 is beyond the current beta cap of 30 |
| Druid | Living Spirit | +5/10/15% Spirit by rank | With the selected talent rank | Effective regeneration conversion and interactions with other Spirit modifiers |
| Human | The Human Spirit | +5% Spirit | On an eligible Human character | Effective regeneration conversion and interactions with other Spirit modifiers |
Soul Harvest's two trait curves both contain 50/100. Its triggered buff has default values of 100/100. That difference does not prove rank 1 receives the maximum effect. Blizzard's October 1 notes confirm the 50/100 regeneration increase was fixed; they do not publish the complete scripted retention or stacking formula.
Resourcefulness is another case where a simple tooltip interpretation is insufficient. Its trait curves include signed values of −20/−40 on one effect and 50/100 on another. This comparison does not convert either curve into a critical-strike proc probability.
For Spirit Tap, Living Spirit and the Human racial, measure the final character-sheet Spirit or regeneration rate. Do not apply a percentage again when the displayed value already includes it. No combined Spirit multiplier or combined retention percentage is asserted here.
Three spending patterns, with explicit assumptions
The following are illustrations, not recommended rotations or measurements of a particular class. Assume the reported five-second suppression model applies, the observation lasts 60 seconds, mana expenditures occur at the stated times, and no temporary buff changes the rates. “Full time” begins only after five seconds without another expenditure. Recovery at the exact boundary has no effect on these continuous-duration calculations.
| Illustration | Assumed mana expenditures | Suppressed time | Full time | Full-time fraction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frequent spending | At 0, 3, 6…57 seconds | 60 seconds | 0 seconds | 0% |
| Bursts with pauses | At 0/2/4/6/8, then 20/22/24/26/28, then 40/42/44/46/48 seconds | 39 seconds | 21 seconds | 35% |
| Isolated expenditures | At 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 seconds | 30 seconds | 30 seconds | 50% |
These patterns resemble sustained activity, repeated short pulls and isolated casts, but real timing depends on the encounter. Combat-state uptime does not tell you which pattern occurred. A character can remain in combat while passing outside the mana-spending window.
For supplied rates in mana per second:
average rate = (1 − full-time fraction) × suppressed rate + full-time fraction × full rate
Multiply the result by five to express an MP5 equivalent. In the burst illustration, that means 0.65 × suppressed rate + 0.35 × full rate. These are accounting equations, checked 4 October 2026, not a Spirit formula. The five-second assumption comes from reported beta investigation, whose exact measurement build is unstated.
Use rates measured with the intended talent and buff state. A “50% retention” tooltip does not justify halving the entire full API rate: that total may include MP5 and other sources. Keep separate buff windows separate, include external gains only once, and account for recovery wasted at full mana. A more efficient regeneration pattern is useful only if it still meets the damage or healing the fight requires.
